Welcome to WebCT

This "Single Page" has been included to answer four of the most 'frequently asked questions' regarding WebCT:

   1. How do I setup the "Welcome Page"?

   2. Why don't my changes take effect immediately?

   3. Why doesn't Chat work?

   4. How do I delete icons from the pages?

How do I setup the "Welcome Page"?

To get to the area in WebCT where the "Welcome Page" may be customized, press (from the main Homepage) the Course Settings button, then press the Welcome Page button.

From this location, the "Welcome Page" may be customized in a similar manner to the Homepage.   Additionally, the course designer may specify whether guest accounts are allowed/not allowed via the Access Control button.   If you would prefer not to have a "Welcome Page", it may be deleted by pressing the Delete Welcome Page button.

Why don't my changes take effect immediately?

The most common reason that changes are not immediately evident is that the browser is using a cached copy of the HTML page.   The browser needs to be set to "verify documents every time".   The following table gives directions for remedying this:

BrowserDirections
Netscape Navigator 2/3 Select "Options", "Network Preferences", then "Cache". For 'Verify Documents', check "Every Time".
Netscape Navigator 4
(Communicator)
Select "Edit", then "Preferences". Under "Category", expand "Advanced" by clicking on the '+', then select "Cache". In the section where it asks about comparing the cached document to the network document, check "Every time".
Internet Explorer 4 Select "View", "Internet Options...", then "General". In the section titled 'Temporary Internet Files', press the Settings button. Check "Every visit to the page".

Why doesn't Chat work?

There are two main reasons for the WebCT Chat Tool (and all other Java applets) to fail. First, the Java files may not be found.   This occurs when the URL in the browser is preceded by a username or username:password. For example, the Java files would not be found if the following URL was used:
    http://John@homebrew.cs.ubc.ca:8900/SCRIPT/Example/scripts/student/serve_chat
In this case, the Java interpreter thinks "John" is part of the server name.

Second, the browser may not have Java and Javascript enabled.   The following table gives directions for enabling Java/Javascript:

BrowserDirections
Netscape Navigator 2 Select "Options", "Security Preferences", then "General". Make sure the "Disable Java" radio button is not checked.
Netscape Navigator 3 Select "Options", "Network Preferences", then "Languages". Check both "Enable Java" and "Enable Javascript".
Netscape Navigator 4
(Communicator)
Select "Edit", then "Preferences". Under "Category", select "Advanced". Check both "Enable Java" and "Enable Javascript".
Internet Explorer 4 Select "View", "Internet Options...", then "Advanced". Find the section titled "Java VM" in the list. If it is not expanded, double_click on "Java VM". Check "Java logging enabled" and "Java JIT compileer enabled".

How do I delete icons from the pages?

Icons -- such as the icon for this "Single Page" -- may be deleted from the main Homepage or a Tool Page.   Press the Customize Homepage (or Customize Toolpage) button, followed by the Reorganize button.   In this area of WebCT, the icons may be reordered, moved between pages, modified, hidden, and deleted.

You may want to hide or delete the icon for this page, for example.   If you hide an icon, you (as the designer) will still be able to see it but your students and graders won't.
